Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) for Weight Loss – Patient Information
You may have seen media coverage suggesting that GPs can now prescribe weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro. While this may apply in some areas, GPs in Suffolk and North East Essex are not commissioned to provide Mounjaro directly for weight loss.
How the process works in our area:
The local NHS has opted for a Community Outreach Service model, which involves:
- Specialist access only – via an NHS Weight Management service (WMCOS), which is not currently active.
- Eligibility assessment – patients must undergo clinical review to determine if they meet strict NHS criteria.
- Criteria-based treatment – only individuals with qualifying health conditions (e.g. certain BMI thresholds) may be offered treatment.
Please note:
URGENT NOTICE: SOME GLP-1 AGONISTS CAN HAVE AN ADVERSE AFFECT ON CONTRACEPTIVE EFFECTIVENESS AND MAY PREVENT IT FROM WORKING. IF YOU USE THE PILL FOR CONTRACEPTION AND ARE THINKING OF TAKING GLP-1s SUCH AS MOUNJARO, PLEASE FIND MORE INFORMATION HERE.
Do not book a GP appointment to request Mounjaro. GPs are not able to prescribe it outside the community specialist pathway.
